From sports and everyday injuries to joint or tendon pain, many orthopaedic conditions can be treated without the need for surgery.

How We Can Help

Common conditions treated at Salem Orthopaedic Surgery with surgical and non-surgical care:

Overuse Injuries (tendonitis, bursitis, stress fractures)

Overuse injuries are damage to the muscles, tendons and bones around a joint caused by continuously repeating one movement or motion over time. They often occur in the shoulders and elbows; knees, ankles and feet; and the wrists or back.

Fractures and Dislocations

A fracture occurs when there is a break or crack in the bone. A dislocation happens when a bone in a joint is pushed out of its usual place. Common causes of fractures and dislocations include sports injuries, falls or car accidents.

Sprains and Strains

A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament, a tissue that connects two bones. Common types of sprains include ankle sprains, wrist sprains and knee sprains; and often occur during activities such as running, jumping or playing sports.

A strain is caused by stretching or pulling a muscle or tendon. Common causes of strains include lifting heavy objects or activities that require sudden or repetitive movements, such as tennis and running.

Non-Surgical Orthopaedic Treatments

Depending on your situation, there are different non-surgical approaches that may be used to help treat your injury and manage your pain:

Medications

Your physician might recommend taking anti-inflammatory medications to treat mild to moderate pain and reduce swelling. Muscle relaxants may also be prescribed to help relax and reduce muscle tension.

Injections

Medications can be injected directly into the affected joints, muscles or tendons to relieve pain and inflammation.

Braces or Splints

Wearing a brace or splint may be advised to provide support and stability to an injured or weak joint, muscle, or bone as it heals.

Home Exercise Programs

Your physician might suggest exercises to do at home that can help you regain your muscle strength, improve the range of motion in your affected joint, and reduce your risk of future injuries.
